Chromatic passing notes The first and last notes of a true linear progression generally make sense of a single harmony (see passing notes between two harmonies for an exception). Therefore, if a chromatic passing note connects two harmonies it does not create a linear progression in this strict sense, it merely passes bewteen two otherwise unconnected notes.
