Advice on exercises in Group B Before attempting to complete the middleground exercises in this group, you need to have understood the following from the handbook: the whole of Chapter 2 (summary of foreground and middleground elaborations) the basics of the Ursatz (pp. 50-72) stages three and four on pp.95-104 (follow the relevant links on the four-stage method page of this website for a brief summary) These exercises are designed so that you get practice not only at finding layers beneath the surface of the music, but that you get a chance to consider small-scale examples of the Ursatz.
